Mesothelioma is a rare cancer type associated with the exposure to asbestos. It is an aggressive disease, which has no cure yet.
Asbestos is known to be a naturally occurring silicate mineral. The inhalation of this material, which was largely used in the past, especially in the industry of construction, causes mesothelioma cancer. Mesothelioma attacks thin membranes covering internal organs in different parts of the body. There are three locations where mesothelioma most commonly develops:
The pleura which is a membrane located in the thoracic cavity (pleural mesothelioma)
The peritoneum which is a membrane located in the abdominal cavity (peritoneal mesothelioma)
The pericardium which is a membrane enclosing the heart (pericardial mesothelioma)
Other, more rarely occurring mesothelioma types:
Mesothelioma develops somewhere between 20 to 40 years and without treatment the patients life expectancy rarely is more than a year. Usually it is diagnosed in an advanced stage causing excessive pain. The common symptoms of this disease are: shortness of breath, difficulty of breathing, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, weight loss, chest pain, fever, cough.
The main options in treating mesothelioma cancer are surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Additional treatments mesothelioma doctors often use are gene therapy, immunotherapy, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation therapy, anti-angiogenesis drugs, intraoperative photodynamic therapy.
Treating malignant mesothelioma is a hard and complex job and requires a harmonious and efficient cooperation of several specialists like oncologists, pathologists, thoracic surgeons, psychotherapists.
